“And the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.” — Matthew 16:18
Matthew 16:18
“And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.”
Jesus declared that the ungodly rule and authority of Satan’s kingdom would no longer prevail against the rule of the righteous in the earth.
Here, He could have said:
- “The rule of hell shall not overpower it.”
- “The counsel of hell shall not overpower it.”
- “The leadership and influence of hell shall not overpower it.”
- “The wisdom and philosophy of hell shall not overpower it.”
In this scripture, Jesus was setting the Church in an adversarial relationship with the gates (rule, authority, leadership) of Satan, stating that the Church shall prevail.
The “gates” can be summarized through the following spheres of influence:
- Spirituality, church, and religion
- Marriage and family
- Education, science, and philosophy
- Government and law
- Media and communication
- Arts and entertainment
- Business, economics, and finance
“Prevail” is a military term. “Prevail” suggests aggression, conflict, and war. We should know from military understanding that the best defense is a strong offense. The Kingdom of Heaven cannot prevail against the “gates” of satanic wisdom without war.
We are called to insert the Kingdom of Heaven into the marketplace, just as Daniel did. We carry and bring heaven’s wisdom, heaven’s solutions, and heaven’s power to the marketplace. This war must be fought for the wisdom, counsel, and leadership of the gates. If we fight, God has promised that righteousness will prevail.
Paul said we are to “take every thought and argument captive to the obedience of Christ…” When we apply this principle to the macro realm of culture and society, we will gain greater and greater victories.
