THE GROOM AND THE BRIDE

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.” — Ephesians 5:31–32

A deep and mysterious aspect of the love of the Groom for the bride is revealed in Ephesians 5. There, we are told that a human marriage is a likeness of the heavenly romance between Jesus and the Bride of Christ.

As a man longs to find his wife and pursues her until he does, as a man loves to look upon his bride, as a husband is exhilarated by his bride—captivated by her, undone by her beauty—so also is the Lord toward His Bride. As a man is overwhelmed when the bride returns his love, so also is the Lord.

When the bride yields to this pursuit and says, “I do,” a marriage is begun. What does that marriage look like to you? Have you become so familiar with religion that you have no time for romance? Have you ceased flirting? Have you filled the marriage with housework?

Jesus, the Groom, loves it when we look to Him. He loves it when we adore Him. He loves it when we tell Him all He means to us. He loves it when we appeal to Him concerning our plight. He is jealous over us.
